Wardrobe Refresh: 7+1 Tips to Save Money

Summer is just around the corner, and of course, you feel like you have nothing to wear… We know the problem well. To update your wardrobe with minimal expense, read our student union's 7+1 tips, and if you follow our advice, your wardrobe will be free of unnecessary items but still full of things to wear. 😉

1. Get Inspired!

Before diving headfirst into refreshing your wardrobe, if you haven’t already, look around among your friends, on Pinterest, or anywhere online to find styles you resonate with, things you could wear, and what would suit you well. This helps you develop your style, and from this season onwards, only look for pieces that fit you. This way, you can avoid being tempted to buy items you might never wear.

2. Check Out Old Clothes!

Dig deep into your closet, the attic at home, your mom’s wardrobe, and even your grandma’s. You’ll be surprised at how many forgotten treasures you’ll find that you once couldn’t imagine wearing but now seem like they were waiting just for you.

3. Reinvent Your Outfits!

Use the old-new pieces you find to spice up your existing outfits. If you have the patience, you can even alter them, or you can ask your mom or grandma for help: a little cut here, a stitch there, and your clothes are refreshed!

4. Declutter What You Don’t Need!

What haven’t you worn even once in the past year? It’s just taking up space! What doesn’t fit into your outfits at all? Get rid of it! After sorting through your entire wardrobe, organize a clothes swap with your friends, which, paired with a bottle of wine, can be a perfect Friday night program! 😉 Plus, you’ll expand your wardrobe with new pieces again – but this time, make sure to only swap for clothes you really need! What your friends didn’t want either? Sell it at a wardrobe sale or donate it to a charity organization!

5. Make a List!

It might sound strange at first since you’re not preparing for a big shopping trip, but just like in a grocery store, the list method works for clothes shopping too: think about what you still need to complete your summer wardrobe and purposefully search for those items. This way, when you see a charming red silk scarf, you won’t buy it just because it’s trendy if you know it doesn’t match your other clothes and you don’t really need it.

6. Visit a Wardrobe Sale!

Here, you can find unique seasonal pieces at great prices for this summer. These won’t be seen on every street corner! 😉 Don’t forget your list at home!

7. Our Favorite: Thrift Stores by Weight!

Budapest has several of these stores where – contrary to popular belief – you won’t only find outdated XXL pieces, but with a bit of searching, you can uncover real treasures. Plan for this to take an afternoon, so only dive in when you have the time and the mood for it!

+1. Avoid Expensive Stores!

You know very well that even if you enter a pricey store just to "browse," it’s usually hard and often impossible to resist the tempting fast fashion pieces. So the best solution is to spare yourself and your wallet the pain and avoid these shops altogether.
