Smart Driving License Acquisition with Y Generation!
Summer is finally here, school is about to close its doors, and if you haven’t yet obtained your driver’s license, you might be considering enrolling in a driving school now.
Summer is the most popular time for students to get their licenses. With more free time on their hands, they can focus on their driving courses. Our latest blog post takes you through the world of obtaining a driver’s license and safe driving – join us!
Let’s Start with the Basics: When Can You Get a Driver’s License in Hungary?
To obtain a “B” category driver’s license (for cars) in Hungary, you need to meet the following criteria: you can apply for the theoretical course at 16 and a half years old, meaning you can enroll in a driving school at this age. You can take the theoretical exam, the highway code (KRESZ), at 16 and three-quarters, and you can take the practical driving test no earlier than your 17th birthday. It’s crucial to note that no loopholes, parental permissions, or miracles can alter these age limits, and frankly, it wouldn’t be advisable anyway! Driving requires not just sitting behind the wheel but also good motor coordination, patience, responsibility, attention, and a significant amount of mental activity, which all require maturity.
Where and How Can You Learn?
Driving schools typically offer both theoretical (KRESZ + first aid) and practical training in one place. KRESZ stands for "Közúti Rendelkezések Egységes Szabályozása," which translates to Unified Road Traffic Regulations. It’s designed to regulate traffic on public roads and roads not closed off to public traffic in Hungary. The basics of KRESZ rules are essentially the same everywhere, so it’s sufficient to learn them once here in Hungary.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, you might have attended in-person classes, but now, KRESZ courses are conducted almost exclusively through e-learning. This mode of learning has both its advantages and disadvantages: you receive all the study materials at once and must manage your own progress by the exam date. Like any other study material, it’s not advisable to cram at the last minute; KRESZ knowledge is best retained through extensive practice and testing. Plus, this knowledge will be essential for many years.
Once you pass the theory test, the most exciting part begins: driving practice! There's an old saying in the driving world: you need to drive as many hours as your age to safely go on the road. Naturally, this is in addition to the mandatory 30 hours required by your driving instructor. If you feel the mandatory hours are not enough, it’s not shameful to book additional lessons at any driving school. It’s better to be confident and skilled than to cause an accident due to lack of preparation.
