Wolt Courier Salary – Here's How Much You Can Earn as a Courier!
Online food delivery has exploded in Hungary over recent years, significantly boosting Wolt's popularity. Nowadays, more people choose courier jobs as their main or side occupation, and students also enjoy working at this Finnish company established in 2014. But here's the big question: how much do Wolt couriers earn? What can you expect to earn as a self-employed individual or student worker? In our article below, we cover all essential information!
Who should consider working as a Wolt courier?
Working as a Wolt courier is a great opportunity for those who enjoy fast-paced jobs and flexible schedules. If you like meeting new people, enjoy dynamic daily routines, and prefer working alone, this job is ideal for you. As a Wolt courier, you can manage your own schedule and decide which deliveries to accept.
Even working just 4-6 hours a day or completing about 10-15 orders can significantly supplement your income. Naturally, if you wish to maximize earnings, you can handle more deliveries and even work full-time. Some couriers work exclusively on weekends for 6-8 hours, while others choose weekdays from 8 am to 4 pm—the schedule is entirely flexible.

How much does a Wolt courier earn?
Wolt courier earnings depend on various factors listed below. However, typically working 20-30 hours per week, one can earn about HUF 200,000–400,000. Full-time couriers in larger cities may even surpass HUF 600,000 per month.
Earnings per delivery start at a minimum of HUF 500, while in Budapest, earnings per delivery can reach HUF 1,000 or even several thousand HUF in specific cases.
Your tariff is always calculated by Wolt's algorithm, considering the delivery distance, package weight, and your vehicle type (bicycle, car, scooter, or electric scooter).
What factors influence Wolt couriers' earnings?
Performance. The more orders you complete, the more you earn. Peak times—especially evenings and weekends—bring higher demand and income. Holidays also see increased traffic, making it worthwhile to work on these days. Full-time couriers should plan at least 6-8 hours per day, but depending on location and pay, sometimes 10-12 hours are necessary to "make the math work."
Taxes. Since the KATA reform of 2022, most courier entrepreneurs opt for lump-sum taxation (átalányadózás) as KATA payers can now only issue invoices to private individuals. Lump-sum taxation increases expenses for entrepreneur couriers, which we will discuss shortly. For students above 25, the student cooperative deducts personal income tax (SZJA), enabling high school and university students to earn more.
Location. Larger cities like Budapest or Debrecen receive more orders, leading to higher earnings than smaller towns. For example, Wolt car and scooter couriers in Budapest earn around HUF 40,000-60,000 daily, though this might require 12-hour shifts. In smaller cities, earnings are slightly lower, with bicycle couriers reporting about HUF 20,000 per day.
Vehicle type. Drivers incur the highest fuel costs, whereas scooter expenses are significantly lower. Electric scooter charging costs are also a consideration. Bicycle couriers have the lowest expenses. However, larger food quantities and multiple packages require a car or scooter, necessitating careful vehicle selection.
What expenses do self-employed couriers face?
Monthly minimum:
HUF 53,798 social security contributions (tb)
HUF 45,344 social contribution tax (szocho)
Accounting fees average HUF 15,000 monthly but can be saved if you handle administration and tax declarations yourself. In such cases, you must thoroughly research all regulations and tax obligations or ask an accountant to guide your calculations.
Initial months have lower costs
"The lump-sum entrepreneur's income is tax-exempt up to half of the annual minimum wage. Hence, lump-sum entrepreneurs pay no personal income tax if their calculated income in 2025 does not exceed HUF 1,744,800. If switching mid-year, the exemption is not proportioned and remains at HUF 1,744,800."
Fuel costs can be significant if choosing the wrong vehicle
Luckily, luxury vehicles aren't needed; lower or mid-category cars suffice. Aim for fuel efficiency and ample cargo space. Full-time car couriers spend around HUF 100,000 monthly on fuel, scooter couriers around HUF 50,000. These costs decrease dramatically with electric vehicles.
How much does renting a car or scooter cost?
Renting a car costs at least HUF 5,000 daily, equating to a minimum HUF 100,000 extra expense for 20 working days, making sense only with high order volumes. Scooter rentals cost about HUF 2,500 daily. Many companies specifically serve couriers, offering discounts on long-term rentals. Short-term renting might work until you save for your own vehicle but isn't sustainable long-term.
Why can renting a vehicle still be advantageous?
No maintenance costs. All repair expenses are covered by the rental company, saving significant money compared to personal vehicle ownership, especially with amortization costs potentially in the hundreds of thousands.
Seasonally appropriate tires provided. The rental company handles tire changes, ensuring road safety and avoiding additional expenses.
Free parking at company premises. No parking fees and increased vehicle security compared to street parking.
Fleet or self-employed courier? Pros and cons!
Since Wolt does not hire couriers as direct employees but works exclusively with subcontractors, courier work is available either through fleet companies or as self-employed, unless you are a student. Let's examine these options!
If working in a fleet…
All administration is handled by your employer, saving you accounting costs. Ideal if you only need temporary work without starting your own business.
Lower pay and less flexible schedules are downsides. Employers might require fixed shifts of 8-12 hours daily.
If self-employed…
Completely flexible scheduling. Work only when you choose, allowing better daily planning, including personal errands.
Freedom to select deliveries. You can decline undesirable deliveries, although income considerations may require accepting most available jobs.
How to apply as a Wolt courier?
As a self-employed individual: Apply through Wolt’s official website, providing personal details and vehicle information. Referrals from Wolt courier partners increase your hiring chances. After an interview and contract signing, you can start delivering.
As a student worker: Full-time students can apply via student cooperatives partnered with Wolt. Y Diák is an official Wolt courier partner, ready to help with administration. Detailed application steps are available via the provided link. If you have questions, contact us confidently through our provided contact details!
What vehicle should you choose?
Car: Ideal for multiple packages and comfortable during bad weather. Choose fuel-efficient models due to high fuel costs. Parking might be challenging in busy cities.
Scooter: Allows fast city travel, quick deliveries, and higher earnings. Small scooters with low fuel consumption are ideal. Electric scooters eliminate fuel costs entirely, needing only regular charging.
Bicycle: Cost-effective without fuel or parking fees, providing regular exercise but can be exhausting long-term. Electric bikes offer a comfortable middle ground.
Electric scooter: Great for navigating traffic quickly but only suitable for smaller deliveries. Ideal for low-volume couriers, covering about 20-40 km per charge.
Wolt courier earnings depend mainly on performance and local demand. Food delivery is excellent as a side job, but to rely solely on courier income, self-employment is recommended. Student job seekers interested in food delivery can find prompt support from Y Diák Cooperative!
