Helping is Cool! – What is Volunteering All About?
Do you have some free time this summer and want to help out? Volunteering is an investment in your future that not only helps others but also benefits you greatly, just like student jobs do.
If you're in high school, you're required to complete 50 hours of community service to graduate – so why not choose something you truly enjoy? The Y-Generation Student Union has some tips for you!
Why Volunteer?
Before applying for any position, consider this: although it's mandatory in high school, don't view volunteering as a burden. Think about what cause you genuinely want to serve. Who or what would you sincerely like to help? You can try yourself in various fields and communities, so we are sure you will find the job that suits you best: you can work in health, social and charity, education, culture and community, environmental and nature conservation, civil protection, and disaster relief, sports, and leisure.
What Can You Gain from Volunteering?
First and foremost, you learn to pay attention to your surroundings: you may not realize that there are much more severe problems than those you face daily. When you get a glimpse into a community different from your own, you inevitably compare what you experience there with your own life. Meeting people with more challenging lives helps you appreciate things you might take for granted.
Volunteering can also help you discover your favorite profession. Even if only for a short time, you can get a glimpse into certain jobs and professions, helping you discover what interests you and what you might like to pursue as a career. As a student, you’re not in a hurry; you have time to experiment and find the field where you can showcase your talent.
You might not think about it, but even though you work without pay during volunteering, you can still account for your work later. When applying for a job as a beginner, community service will be a significant plus in the eyes of your employer. Volunteering shows your future boss that you are versatile and enthusiastic, proactive about your future, and capable of taking responsibility and working in a team. It sounds great, doesn’t it? 😉
