Gap Year at University? Make the Most of It!

While nobody likes to talk about the end of summer, it’s unavoidable. As we count down the last days of the break, it means it’s time to slowly return to routine. Are you dreading it because you keep remembering the hectic, study-filled weekdays of past semesters? Don’t despair—taking a gap year at university isn’t a setback. Whether it's for just a semester or a whole year, we’ve compiled ways you might consider spending your time off school effectively.

In Style: Gap Year

In Western countries, it’s common for people your age to take a “gap year” after finishing high school or earning their first degree. This means that instead of continuing their education, they spend time exploring themselves through travel and personal development. Think of a gap year not as putting off career-building, but rather as laying the foundation for your career. So, a gap year isn’t a wasted time lounging around; it’s a period in your life when you figure out where you want to go next. If you ended up in this situation because of entry requirements, it’s time to stop moping and start planning a year focused on yourself. And you don’t need a fat wallet to make the most of it. Here are some top suggestions:

Gap Year at University = Language Learning

Yes, it’s everywhere, but language learning is truly important. For many of our host and intern positions, and practically all jobs today, at least a solid intermediate level of English is required. So, dig out your old textbooks, scour the internet, set up a schedule: this gap year could lead to a new language certification. And a new certification often equates to a more successful career. Are you ready?

Don’t Let Your Fitness Gap!

In the rush to prepare for university entrance exams, you probably skipped workouts to study more. However, neglecting physical activity during your gap year at university isn’t wise. Exercising helps manage stress and keep the pounds off. Put more focus on physical activity so you can return from your gap year in the best shape of your life!

Learn to Cook!

Does going to university also mean becoming an adult for you? Moving out and managing your own home can be tough at first, especially cooking. No matter how good the hourly wages are from our current positions, daily food delivery can strain your budget. We recommend diving into the world of cooking and baking during your gap year. Start by mastering your favorite dishes and a few quick, budget-friendly meals. You can then get creative with variations and, if you meal prep, you’ll have homemade food every day instead of fast food. Plus, your girlfriend/boyfriend will appreciate that the university delay has turned you into a kitchen wizard!

Think It Over – Gap Year at University Isn’t Always by Chance

A gap year is also a fantastic opportunity to reconsider if you really want to pursue the field you initially chose. It’s completely okay if, straight out of high school, you’re not sure about your goals. Use this time off from university to enhance yourself, re-explore the list of universities, and read extensively about various subjects. Loop in some upperclassmen, ask them to share about their courses. First-hand info is the most reliable.

We hope we’ve managed to lift your spirits: a gap year at university isn’t a failure; try to see it as a new opportunity.
