Is Student Work Really This Simple?
In short: yes, but we don’t want to leave you without a little guidance. The COVID-19 pandemic undeniably brought significant changes to the labor market. However, the good news for you is that the demand for student workers remains strong. Companies view employing and highly training students as a form of investment.
Students and university attendees bring up-to-date knowledge and fresh expertise, introducing new perspectives to companies. Here are the 3+1 most important steps to take up student work - stay with us!
1. Register with a Student Cooperative!
Student cooperatives, such as Y Generation Student Cooperative, exist to ensure the legal working conditions for students. They help make student work straightforward and smooth, helping you find the position that best suits you. They guarantee safe working conditions: you will surely receive your wages, and your employment will meet all legal requirements. You will have valid insurance, and you can obtain the necessary certificates for your tax return from them.
But how to start? The first step to taking up student work is to register on our website, filling out your student cooperative form with the required information. Then, you will need to come to our office in Budapest's 13th district, Radnóti Miklós Street 2, to sign the necessary documents. As most student cooperatives’ names suggest, Y Generation Student Cooperative can only employ students, so you must have a valid student ID for daytime education or a school attendance certificate. Additionally, you need to have your ID card, address card, tax card, and TAJ card (social security card) with you. We will also ask for a bank account number, as your salary will be transferred to you. Being a member of the student cooperative means you have to purchase a share in our cooperative for 1000 HUF during registration. Don’t worry, you will get this back when you leave!
2. The Most Exciting Part: Browse for Student Work!
One of the great advantages of student cooperatives is that they offer a wide range of opportunities in one place, allowing you to choose from various jobs. At Y Generation, you can find easy physical work, simple roles in commerce and the service sector, office jobs, call center positions, and an increasing number of internship programs. If your university or college does not require it, we recommend spending a semester at a company as an internship. Professional career programs help you gain valuable experience while studying, which will be very beneficial for your career. You can discover your true talents, understand which positions you enjoy, and set the direction you want to go. Not to mention, the experience looks excellent on your resume. 😉
Job postings always include the tasks you need to perform, the conditions, and the salary. We often receive questions about the location of student jobs: good news, we offer positions not only in Budapest but also in many cities across the country.
3. Create the Perfect Resume!
You might wonder why this task comes at this point in the student work process. It’s because your resume (and cover letter if necessary) should always be tailored to the specific job posting and company you’re applying to. Different knowledge will be important for a financial position and a job in the IT sector, so always emphasize the experiences that will make your resume more attractive to recruiters.
A good resume briefly, concisely, and clearly shows your educational background and any work experience. You need to create a document that grabs the reader’s attention at first glance, as HR professionals review dozens of applications for each job. Stand out! The simplest way is to divide the A4 document into two columns, with one side showing your educational data and the other your work experience and other skills. It’s essential to list your information in reverse chronological order, with the most recent at the top. Always include a passport photo on your resume, and don’t forget to provide contact information! For more CV tips, read this blog post!
4. Patience!
Your application for student work always starts online - your prepared resume will be sent to both the student cooperative and the targeted workplace. Since the job posting on the cooperative's website lists the requirements for the student job, Y Generation’s pre-screening process will check if you have the necessary skills and attitude for the job. Then, depending on the position, you may be invited for a personal interview before your resume is forwarded to the employer. If your application is successful, our coordinators will immediately notify you of the next steps. Now, you just need a bit of patience while your application is reviewed, and if all goes well, you’ll be called in for an interview!
