Beach Student Jobs – What Opportunities Await Us This Summer?
Summer is finally here, so it’s high time to combine business with pleasure. One of the best ways to do this is by taking on a student job at the beach, where we can earn money while enjoying every minute of the sunny weather. Let’s explore what opportunities are available and what skills we’ll need for each position!
What types of student jobs can we do at the beach?
There are many different student job opportunities at the beach, depending on our skills and the types of tasks we’re happy to take on. Fortunately, most beaches are looking to hire a large number of students during the summer season, as the number of visitors increases significantly during this period.
Here are the most popular positions!
Lifeguard Student Job
Being a lifeguard is one of the most responsible positions. Our main task will be to monitor the safety of people swimming in the pools, and in case of emergency, we must jump into the water immediately to assist those in trouble. Since every second counts in an emergency, our attention must never waver.
What qualifications are needed?
Lifeguard certification, which can be obtained through a specific training course. Typically, this involves a 7-day training program where we learn how to save lives and gain basic knowledge about bath culture, public health laws, and even water quality. We’ll also learn how to rescue desperate swimmers from the pool without putting ourselves or others in danger.
First aid knowledge. These skills are also covered in the lifeguard training, but if we already have a driver’s license or attend a healthcare-related school, we might already be familiar with many aspects. The training includes treatment for water inhalation and, of course, proper resuscitation techniques, followed by a practical exam.
What are the lifeguard's tasks?
Constant monitoring of pools and bathing areas. From the first minute of our shift to the last, we must keep a close eye on swimmers. We need to spot signs of exhaustion, muscle cramps, or dizziness caused by the summer heat. Ideally, we notice these signs before anything serious happens. For this, a high tolerance for monotony and excellent concentration are essential.
Ensuring that swimmers follow the rules. Children and even adults often enjoy pushing boundaries at the beach, but as lifeguards, we must strictly enforce safety rules. For example, jumping into the pool from the edge might be fun for many, but one wrong move or slip can lead to serious injuries. If someone breaks the rules, we must ask them firmly yet respectfully to follow safe bathing practices.
Immediate assistance and rescue in emergencies. While some people think lifeguards "do nothing all day but sit and chat by the pool," in reality, it’s quite the opposite. True, there may be uneventful days, but in an emergency, we’re often the only ones swimmers can count on. We must assess the severity of the situation in moments and apply what we’ve learned in training to rescue people from the water.
What skills are required?
- Excellent physical endurance and swimming ability
- Sharp attention and quick reaction time
- Confident communication
- Patience and assertiveness
Waterslide Attendant
The waterslide attendant is responsible for supervising the safe use of the slides and preventing accidents. This is also a highly responsible role since small or large accidents can easily happen on slides—sometimes by chance, but often due to ignoring safety regulations.
What qualifications are needed?
Waterslide attendant certification. This is typically shorter than lifeguard training and can sometimes be completed in just 1–2 days. Employers often provide a short training session before the student job begins, and sometimes even the student organization arranges and pays for the course if we commit to working a few months.
What does the job involve?
Monitoring the safe use of the slide. We must know every rule regarding slide use. Dangerous stunts are still frequently seen at the beach, like pushing off with hands and feet for extra force or sliding down backward—these must never be allowed. We must pay extra attention to kids, who often push each other on the stairs in a “who slides first” competition.
Regular inspection of the slide’s condition. Every day, we’ll check the slide’s condition and report any issues to the technical supervisor or inspector. The training will clearly outline the inspection process. While modern slides are very safe, inspections must never be skipped.
What skills are required?
- Discipline and quick reaction time
- Confident communication
- Assertive demeanor
Kitchen Assistant
Beachside buffets and restaurants experience huge traffic during summer, so many of them hire students as kitchen assistants. Unlike lifeguard or waterslide roles, this job involves less responsibility but fast-paced daily routines.
What qualifications are needed?
Usually no specific qualifications are required, but following hygiene rules and having basic kitchen experience can be an advantage. A short training period might be provided, but the tasks are generally straightforward and manageable.
What does the job involve?
Food preparation and serving. By assisting the head chef, we might help peel vegetables and fruits and learn firsthand about the world of gastronomy. Modern kitchens often use machines, making the job less physically demanding. Even after just one month, we’ll learn countless recipes and see how professionals work.
Dishwashing and keeping the kitchen clean. If we’re not helping the chefs directly, we’ll likely be responsible for dishwashing and cleanliness. This may be a bit monotonous, but the sight of sparkling dishes and a spotless kitchen can be very motivating. Let’s take pride in our work—if we enjoy hospitality, we can climb the ladder year after year.
What skills are required?
- Good endurance
- Precision and speed
- Observing hygiene standards
- Teamwork and flexibility
