Active Rest for a Successful Student Job
If you want to truly benefit from your student job—both personally and financially—it's important to consider how you spend your time after work. While lounging around and chilling are great (and often necessary), active rest can also rejuvenate you and boost your motivation for the weekdays.
Here are some tips on how you can actively spend your free time and see improvements that even your boss will notice!
What is Active Rest?
Active rest is simple to describe: it’s a form of relaxation that refreshes both your mind and body. So, it doesn't include passive rest like sunbathing or napping. Instead, it encompasses activities that can be tied to hobbies.
Traditionally, active rest involves getting your body moving. However, we believe that consciously sitting down to study or read after workdays also counts as active relaxation!
If you’re not sure what active rest involves, don't worry! Experimenting with your student job is a great opportunity to discover it.
Read for Better Work Relationships!
If your job requires English proficiency and you want to improve, read books in English! Reading is one of the best forms of relaxation, and when combined with language learning, it becomes one of the most beneficial forms of active rest. As you transition from student to full-time employee, higher levels of English may be expected, so it’s wise to focus on this during your student years. If you don’t want to turn your active rest into hard study, look for beginner-level English novels in the library—these can improve your skills while also supporting your evening relaxation.
Exercise – Not Just for Work’s Sake!
When we talk about exercise, many think of sweaty, grueling half-hour workouts. However, being in good physical condition is also an advantage for our light physical jobs, including retail and hospitality positions! Try to incorporate a longer, leisurely walk after work or find a YouTube video that inspires you to move. Week by week, you’ll notice that you handle the physical demands of work shifts better—a truly rewarding way to relax!
Active Rest with YouTube? Yes, It’s Possible!
Are you curious about how to excel in your field? Want to understand the industry in which you're working? Watch YouTube videos! There’s a wealth of educational content on YouTube that can contribute to rewarding active rest. Look for industry vloggers who share their work experiences and insights. Watching videos can relax your tired mind from the day while also gathering useful info about your student job. The next day, you can discuss what you’ve learned with your boss and ask any further questions. They’ll appreciate that you don’t just view your student job as a checkmark on your to-do list. Instead, you want to grow, gain more experience, and sometimes engage with it as a form of active rest.
If You Need a Break, Take One!
We think it’s very important that you try to spend your time during active rest in a relaxed yet fruitful manner. However, there are times when it’s better to step away from the hustle and bustle. During such times, we recommend spending some time with friends or going on a hike. After recharging your "batteries," you can start planning how to make the most of your years with a student job.
